With the move to our new workshop, we are now
able to offer a programme of short courses in the
various aspects of enamelling. Within the
workshop environment, in small groups of no
more than three students, we can offer intense
and concentrated tuition.

The workshop is based within the pretty village of
Yoxford, close to the Suffolk heritage coast,
with Aldeburgh, Walberswick and Southwold and the R.S.P.B. sites at Minsmere a short drive away.
Close too, is the Snape Maltings Concert hall, with
Benjamin Britten/Peter Peers Music School set in
its beautiful reed bed surroundings.

Because we are working in such a small group,
we can work within a flexible environment, and it
will be possible to tailor the workshops to
individual needs. We shall contact all students
prior to their arrival and discuss their work and
appraise what we can achieve during the course.
Naturally short courses are not a replacement for
the time spent in practice, but we should be able
to lay a good foundation and good work practices
to help gain improved results.

I would ask Students to bring with them examples
of their work, bad as well as good; to have the
opportunity to look at problems from another
perspective; you can learn a lot by mistakes!

Also bring pieces you would like to work on,
to bring idea and source material, future projects,
sketch books etc.

Our courses will run from the evening of your
arrival, starting with a relaxing evening meal,
giving you the opportunity to meet with fellow
students, it will also give us the opportunity to
present the outline for the coming days, and to
discuss and assess student's individual work,
and their aspirations for the course.

Within the cost we will provide:-
Reception and meal on evening of arrival,3 days
workshop tuition, basic materials, including
enamels.

Workshops will run from 9 -5 with a 1 hour lunch break.

All lunches and refreshments are included.

Students would be expected to bring their own
hand tools and provide any precious metals
for working on.

We can provide details of local Accommodation if
required.

Champlevé/Engraving Workshop
Looking at all aspects of engraving and its place
in enamelling, suitable for both beginner, and for
those with some experience.

The course will look at the way engraving and
textures enhance the qualities of enamel, which
can bring life and brightness to the work. We will
go through all sections of the skill, including
etching, preparation of tools, basic principles of
carving, texturing, and show the beneficial effect
engraving can bring to your enamel work. For the
student with no engraving experience we will start
from basics, for the experienced it will give you the
opportunity to evaluate your working practices, and
to give you the chance to improve and expand your
skill, and to explore what is open to you.

Enamelling Workshop
Covering all areas of the enamelling techniques,
looking at workshop practices, from preparation
of enamels, firing, through to finishing.

We will look at colours, how to approach and bring
enamel work into your designs, we will look at
manufacture and production aspects relating to
enamelling, grading colours, Pliqué a jour,
cloisonné, and overview to cover all aspects of this
craft.

This course would not only suit someone who is
interested in introducing enamel into their work for
the first time, but to the practitioner who may want
to reaccess his or her working methods and work
in a new direction.
